One of the very first signs of aging is the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles can be caused by a number of factors including genetics, lifestyle, sun exposure, as well as repeated facial movements such as frowning, smiling, and squinting. These factors ultimately lead to loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin, thus producing folds in the skin that can no longer “bounce back”.
There are two types of wrinkles:
Dynamic wrinkles occur when the muscles contract to form facial expressions. For example, smiling may cause crow’s feet to be visible while smiling, however, after your expression has relaxed the lines are no longer visible.
Static wrinkles are visible regardless of facial expression and appear to be “etched” into the skin. They may appear in areas where repeated muscle activity has occurred such or skin has become lax, such as the forehead, cheeks, crowfeet and between your eyebrows.
If left untreated, dynamic wrinkles eventually form static wrinkles which deepen and worsen over time. Luckily treatments like neuromodulator injections, dermal fillers, laser treatments and more, are able to reduce the appearance of existing wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming.
